This charming cast relief represents two children from the extended Charpentier family: Jean, who was the artist’s son, born in 1884, and Pierre, the son of his sister Emma, born in 1892. This date of 1892 corresponds to the date of the work for which this relief was created. In 1893, Charpentier presented a magnificent layette, which was exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in Brussels.

This object was acquired by the King of Belgium for the Royal collection. The two reliefs on this layette are Charpentier’s most famous relief, Jeune mère allaitant son enfant, and Jean et Pierre.
